Because there are so many different types of staircases, there are various types of stair lifts to fit them. There are both straight and curved stair lifts to match up with staircases of the same ilk. As well, external stair lifts exist for staircases that are outside. However, there is one particular facet of all staircases that is necessary. It doesn’t matter if they are straight or curved, indoor or outdoor. They all must be a minimum width in order to have a stair lift installed.

What is the minimum stair width required for a set of stairs to be able to install a stair lift?
In order to install a stair lift, the minimum width of a staircase must be 36 inches, wall to wall. The only exception is when the staircase incorporates a stringer. A stringer is a piece of wood that is generally two to two and a half inches wide on both sides. It is attached to the top of the staircase and is sometimes attached to the treads (the flat surfaces where feet are placed). On most staircases, the treads sit inside the stringer.
The minimum width requirement allows for handrails to protrude out from the wall without complications. Depending on the profile of the handrail, it can be anywhere between three and five and a half inches from the wall. It all comes down to safety. It’s vital that, post-installation, stair lift users can ride up and down the stairs safely. As well, it’s important that those who don’t use the stair lift still have room to walk up and down the stairs.
