What Is The Minimum Stair Width Required To Install A Stair Lift?

Because there are so many different types of staircases, there are various types of stair lifts to fit them. There are both straight and curved stair lifts to match up with staircases of the same ilk. As well, external stair lifts exist for staircases that are outside. However, there is one particular facet of all staircases that is necessary. It doesn’t matter if they are straight or curved, indoor or outdoor. They all must be a minimum width in order to have a stair lift installed.

What is the minimum stair width required for a set of stairs to be able to install a stair lift?

In order to install a stair lift, the minimum width of a staircase must be 36 inches, wall to wall. The only exception is when the staircase incorporates a stringer. A stringer is a piece of wood that is generally two to two and a half inches wide on both sides. It is attached to the top of the staircase and is sometimes attached to the treads (the flat surfaces where feet are placed). On most staircases, the treads sit inside the stringer.

The minimum width requirement allows for handrails to protrude out from the wall without complications. Depending on the profile of the handrail, it can be anywhere between three and five and a half inches from the wall. It all comes down to safety. It’s vital that, post-installation, stair lift users can ride up and down the stairs safely. As well, it’s important that those who don’t use the stair lift still have room to walk up and down the stairs.

For homes where the staircases are fairly narrow, the Handicare 1100 Straight Stair Lift is highly recommended. It has an ultra-streamlined design that takes up less space. This model is actually considered a perfect solution for all staircase configurations. It comes with a Patented Multi-Drive System to ensure the stair lift performs at peak levels at all times.

The Handicare 1100 Straight Stair Lift also features a Friction Drive System. Because it does not require a gear rack, this model offers a quieter, smoother ride. As well, this robust stair lift is easy to maintain, very stylish and can easily integrate into any environment.

The Handicare 1000 XXL has a lifting capacity of 440lbs. It comes fully equipped with a power seat swivel to assist in dismounting at the top of the staircase. The “smart seat” has an extra long depth of 16 ¾” and inside width from 21 ½” to 25”. It has even has six seat colours to choose from to ensure it matches your home’s decor.

The Harmar SL600HD has an extraordinary lifting capacity of 600lbs. It has a seat that swivels 85° at the upper landing for easy dismount or transfer. The seat slides out from the wall as it pivots at top landing.

The Handicare Freecurve Stair Lift is the only single tube curved stair lift available in North America. It is ideal for spiral, narrow or steep staircases with limited space. The Freecurve is known for being able to overcome the toughest staircase challenges while looking great in your home!

Is it possible to install a stair lift myself?

If you have a bit of construction or technical, engineering type background, it’s possible. But there are a number of factors that would probably influence you NOT to do the installation yourself.

On the YES side:

If it’s a straight stairlift, it’s possible:

  • If there’s a supplier (manufacturer or dealer) willing to support you with installation questions.
  • If you have a bit of technical knowledge, good measurements and understanding of mathematical information to make the necessary calculations to get the right parts.

On the NO side:

  • It can be a bit complex or confusing. If you don’t have the correct tools for cutting or joining the rails.
  • If you run into an issue after installation (like a breakdown), it may not be covered by warranty.
  • If it involves a stairlift with turns or curves, it’s challenging to ensure the exact measurements that will ensure a perfectly smooth and safe ride.

We are sure to have a model of stairlift suitable for your needs, safety and budgetary requirements.
