Just in case the start of spring wasn’t enough to get you excited, Advantage Home Health Solutions is happy to announce a special promotion! If you purchase a new Pride Mobility Scooter, we will add a rear basket, a phone holder AND a side mirror for FREE! That’s a $200 value. As we described in last week’s blog, mobility scooters are excellent solutions for both seniors and people with disabilities.
In this week’s blog, we’d like to answer a few of the most commonly asked questions we receive about electric mobility scooters.
Can mobility scooters be driven on the road?
Firstly, it is imperative that we make absolutely clear that mobility scooters are NOT street legal. We never recommend driving them on a public street alongside motor vehicles. With that said, many mobility scooter users do use these solutions on the road. We strongly advise everyone who chooses to take their scooters on the street to increase their visibility with a flag or other brightly-coloured object.
Both mid-size electric mobility scooters and outdoor mobility scooters are ideal for outdoor use. To reiterate, we recommend that they are used in the same areas as other pedestrians. It’s wise to ensure you use the correct mobility scooter for its intended purpose. Travel mobility scooters are intended for indoor use but can be used on smooth, hard surfaces outdoors.
Can mobility scooters be stored outside?
Mobility scooters are high-quality solutions. Therefore, they can be stored outside even though it is not something we would recommend. If it isn’t feasible to store your scooter in an indoor facility, we advise that you protect it with a cover. As well, it’s wise to keep the mobility scooter chained up in a private and secured location. The key, of course, is to prevent theft. Be sure to keep the keys in a separate, equally secure location.
If you are storing a smaller mobility scooter outside, it’s wise to bring its batteries inside with you. It’s important, by the way, that you do not leave your scooter uncharged for months at a time. Doing so will drain its batteries. Batteries tend to last a long time if they are disconnected when the scooter is not in use.
Can mobility scooters be taken on airplanes?
So, you have some upcoming travel plans, do you? You are in luck! As their name connotes, travel scooters are designed with travel in mind. These ultra lightweight folding mobility scooters are small and easy to fold or dismantle. As a result, loading them into vehicles or on an airplane is no problem at all. There are, of course, some key things to keep in mind if you are booking a flight.
Travel scooters have lithium-ion (or li-ion) batteries. They should be pulled from the chair and taken on board with you. As well, be sure to check with your airline to ensure you won’t have any issues checking your travel scooter in. Depending on its make, it will either easily fold up in one piece or it can be pulled apart.
