Welcome to the very first Advantage Home Health Solutions blog entry of 2019! On behalf of our entire team, we hope you had an amazing holiday season and that the new year is already a very happy one for you.
In 2019, one of our primary goals will continue to be to help the elderly loved ones in your life regain their independence while keeping very safe and sound. We imagine that the health and well-being of the older adults in your life remain a top priority for you as we get 2019 started. Thankfully, there are number of things you can do to help the senior in your life have a very happy new year!
Get help from the grandkids.
You should never feel alone in your mission to keep your elderly parent safe, happy and healthy. It’s a job for the entire family. Encourage your children to get in on the action of taking care of Grandma or Grandpa. Set up special occasions that everyone can get involved in. Renewing your family’s commitment to senior care is an excellent way to help your elderly loved one enjoy 2019.
“Most older adults can agree that there is nothing quite as special as spending time with the grandchildren,” says Sunrise Senior Living, “But you shouldn’t only meet up for special occasions. Staying connected with your grandkids on a regular basis will strengthen the bond between you and keep the entire family closer together. This year, consider gathering with your loved ones every other week to catch up.”
Keep them mentally active.
In a moment, we’ll revisit the importance of exercise for older adults. However, the mental and emotional state of an elderly person should never be ignored. It’s important to keep the aging brain active. It helps with memory and overall cognitive function.
“The more you use your brain, the better it works,” confirms Hallmark Homecare, “There are plenty of things you can do to engage your mind like read, do crossword puzzles or play solitaire or Sudoku. Socialization is also a great way to give your brain a boost, so explore social opportunities in your area such as clubs or senior center discussions. You could also volunteer, take a community education class, or even take a college course. Some colleges offer free courses for senior citizens.”
Keep them physically active.
As mentioned, the importance of exercise for the elderly should not be underestimated. To keep their muscles strong and respiratory systems in good working order, a little light physical activity is imperative. This is especially true for elderly individuals with particular ailments that need remedying.
“Even if you have a diagnosis that impacts your health (like heart disease, diabetes or arthritis), physical activity can still be safe for older adults,” Hallmark Homecare points out, “If so, this is encouraged and can often help with some of the symptoms related to these conditions.”
