Welcome to the last Advantage Home Health Solutions blog for 2022! On behalf of our entire team, we would like to wish you a very happy, safe and prosperous new year. As we all prepare for the start of 2023, we’re likely thinking about the ways in which we can make the new year our best year yet. Do you have an older adult in your life? Remember that he/she likely has some resolutions of his/her own.
What can you do to help prepare your elderly loved one for a wonderful 2023?
Get more sleep.
The benefits of a good night’s sleep should not be underestimated. We all need approximately seven to nine hours of sleep each night. However, for seniors, restful sleeps can be hard to come by. This is especially true for those who battle with aches, pains and the need to frequently use the bathroom. Wisconsin’s Luther Manor notes that ample sleep helps seniors to maintain their immune systems and improve their memory and concentration.
To combat insomnia, their website suggests avoiding television, cell phones, and/or computers in the bedroom; eliminating caffeinated or alcoholic beverages in the evening; keeping the bedroom cool, comfortable, and quiet; going to bed and get up at the same time every day; avoiding long naps; and staying active during the day to tire yourself out.
Exercise for at least ten minutes a day.
We all need to stay active in order to promote optimum health. One of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions for people of all ages is to lose weight. However, daily exercise provides so many more health benefits than just weight loss. For seniors, daily light exercise can help to improve blood circulation and promote better strength and balance. As Oregon’s Caring Places Management tells us, exercise may be the key to a longer life.
“Though the research behind the positive effects of exercise on aging is extensive, the findings from a 30-year study effectively sum them up,” informs their website, “Per the findings, incorporating an exercise regime of walking, jogging, or cycling in seniors can drastically improve physiological characteristics such as blood pressure, resting heart rate, maximum pumping capacity, and muscle mass.”
Eat well and stay hydrated.
Has there ever been a list of healthy initiatives that doesn’t include nutrition and hydration? It may sound like a no brainer to eat healthy foods and drink a lot of water. But how many of us maintain nutritious diets? It’s vital that seniors eat well and stay hydrated. In 2023, seek to make changes to your diet to improve your overall health. As Luther Manor reminds us, a healthy diet is one of the simplest health goals for seniors.
“Focus on consuming high-fibre fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with nuts and low-fat dairy and leaner cuts of meat,” advises their website, “Limit your consumption of fatty meat, sugar, butter, salt, and pre-packaged foods. Following these guidelines can help protect against cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s, as well as common illnesses caused by viruses and bacteria.”
