How Compression Garments Help Manage Common Health Conditions

If your legs often feel tired, swollen or achy by the end of the day, you’re certainly not alone. Many Canadians experience circulation issues, swelling or vein-related conditions that make everyday activities more difficult than they need to be. Fortunately, compression stockings offer a simple, non-invasive solution that has been trusted by healthcare professionals for decades.

Compression therapy is one of the most effective ways to improve circulation, reduce swelling and support healthier veins. While many people associate compression socks with travel or pregnancy, these specialized garments can help manage a wide variety of medical conditions while improving comfort and mobility.

How does compression therapy work?

According to Marjorie Hecht of Healthline, “compression therapy uses controlled pressure to increase blood flow in your legs and improve blood flow to the heart. At the same time, it supports your veins and decreases swelling.” This gentle, graduated pressure helps prevent blood from pooling in the lower legs while encouraging healthy circulation throughout the body.

Compression stockings remain the most common form of compression therapy and are widely recommended by physicians for a variety of circulatory conditions. Depending on the severity of your condition, compression garments are available in different pressure levels, ranging from mild over-the-counter options to prescription-grade compression.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

One of the most common conditions treated with compression garments is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). CVI occurs when the valves inside the leg veins become weakened or damaged, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart. As blood pools in the legs, symptoms often include heavy, aching legs; swelling around the ankles; leg fatigue; skin discolouration; cramping; and varicose veins.

Hecht notes that compression therapy is frequently prescribed to prevent venous insufficiency from becoming more serious. By gently supporting the veins, compression stockings improve blood flow and help relieve many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with CVI.

Varicose veins.

Varicose veins affect millions of adults and become increasingly common with age. These enlarged, twisted veins develop when weakened vein walls and valves allow blood to collect instead of flowing efficiently. Compression stockings won’t eliminate varicose veins, but they can significantly reduce leg pain, swelling, throbbing, heaviness and fatigue. Many physicians recommend compression garments as part of a long-term management plan, particularly for individuals who spend long hours standing or sitting at work.

Leg and ankle swelling (edema).

Swollen feet and ankles can develop for many reasons. They include prolonged standing, extended travel, pregnancy, certain medications and underlying medical conditions. Compression garments help reduce edema by encouraging excess fluid to move back into the body’s circulatory system rather than collecting in the tissues.

Hecht reports that lower-pressure compression garments are often particularly effective for reducing swelling, especially when paired with regular movement such as walking. For many people, wearing compression stockings throughout the day can greatly improve comfort and reduce that familiar feeling of tightness around the ankles by evening.

Lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by a buildup of lymphatic fluid, usually in the arms or legs. It may occur following cancer treatment, surgery, radiation therapy or injury to the lymphatic system.

Compression garments play a vital role in managing lymphedema by helping prevent fluid from accumulating in affected limbs. Healthcare professionals often recommend compression stockings or sleeves alongside other treatments such as manual lymphatic drainage, exercise and skin care to help control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot develops deep within a vein, typically in the leg. Because these clots can potentially travel to the lungs, DVT is considered a serious medical condition. Compression stockings are commonly prescribed after surgery or periods of prolonged immobility to help reduce the risk of developing blood clots. Individuals recovering from surgery or facing extended periods of inactivity should always follow their physician’s recommendations regarding compression therapy.

Leg ulcers and wound healing.

Poor circulation can slow wound healing, particularly among older adults and individuals living with diabetes or chronic vein disease. Compression therapy is often used to assist with healing venous leg ulcers by improving circulation around the affected area. It may also help reduce the risk of ulcers returning once they have healed.

Pregnancy places extra pressure on the circulatory system, often resulting in swollen ankles, tired legs and the development of varicose veins. Compression stockings provide gentle support that can help reduce swelling while improving comfort throughout pregnancy. Many expectant mothers find they can remain more active and comfortable by wearing properly fitted compression garments during the day.

Standing or sitting for long periods.

Not every compression garment wearer has an underlying medical condition. People whose jobs require prolonged standing or sitting often benefit from compression wear. Think healthcare workers, retail employees, office professionals and frequent travellers.

Hecht notes that compression therapy can help prevent leg swelling for people who spend extended periods sitting or standing, including during long flights. The combination of compression and movement helps the calf muscles pump blood more efficiently back toward the heart.

Athletic recovery.

Compression garments have also become popular among athletes looking to support recovery after exercise. Research has produced mixed findings regarding performance enhancement, but some studies suggest compression garments may help reduce post-exercise soreness and improve recovery following strenuous physical activity. While athletes continue to explore these benefits, the strongest scientific evidence still supports compression therapy for medical conditions involving circulation and swelling.
