3 Awesome New Year’s Resolutions For Older Adults

On behalf of everyone at Advantage Home Health Solutions, we would like to wish you a very Happy New Year! We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that we are open today and will be open tomorrow as well. On New Year’s Eve, we will be open for just half of the day. We will then remain closed until our first day of operations in the new year which will be Monday, January 3, 2022.

With just a few days to go until the beginning of 2022, you may be in the process of thinking about some New Year’s Resolutions. Here are three awesome ones for older adults:

1. Quit smoking.

Without question, this is one of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions of all time. It also goes without saying that it’s an important one to make no matter your age. For senior citizens, cigarette smoke couldn’t be more deadly. HealthinAging.org reveals that cigarette smokers are twice as likely to develop heart disease as non-smokers.

“It is never too late to quit,” the website reminds us, “You can still reduce your risk of many health problems, breathe easier, have more energy, and sleep better if you quit smoking. You can access the National Cancer Institute’s website SmokeFree60+ for resources. Additionally, ask your healthcare provider for help. Don’t lose hope if you failed to quit in the past. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good.”

2. Keep the mind stimulated.

For older adults, mental exercise is just as important as the physical variety. It’s especially important for seniors to keep their minds stimulated in order to ward off memory loss. Read books, do crossword puzzles and even watch and participate in trivia-based game shows.

“Challenging your brain with regular mental exercise is just as important as physical activity!” agrees AllSeniorsCare.com, “Learn something new through on-line classes, book or movie clubs, or even a photography group. Lifelong learning helps build cognitive reserve: the brain’s resilience and ability to cope with stress and challenges.”

3. Guard against slips and falls.

Is there a more important New Year’s Resolution for a senior to make? Slips and falls account for the majority of hospitalizations for Canadian seniors. It should go without saying that it’s important to safeguard your home in an effort to prevent tumbles at all costs. According to HealthinAging.org, one in every three older adults falls each year — and falls are a leading cause of injuries and death among older adults.

Exercises such as walking or working out with an elastic band can increase your strength, balance, and flexibility and help you avoid falls,” informs the website, “Also ask your healthcare provider to check that you’re not taking any pills that can make you more likely to fall. Eliminate items in your home that are easy to trip over, like throw rugs. Insert grab bars in your bathtub or shower, and install night lights so it’s easier to see at night.”
